Saviez-vous que dans la culture Crie, la structure et la construction d’un tipi (migawap) sont hautement symboliques et spirituels? À chacun des 15 poteaux qui le constituent se rattache un enseignement. Dans le livre «Les sept enseignements sacrés», les auteurs David Bouchard, Kristy Cameron et Martin Joseph ont tenté de construire une version générique des principaux enseignements , surtout axée sur la culture Anishnabe/Ojibwé. En fait, chacune des Premières Nations possède ses propres pratiques culturelles et spirituelles. Venez en découvrir davantage sur la culture et la spiritualité Crie avec mes partenaires Ekti Cardinal et son conjoint David McConnell. Vous découvrirez comment ces enseignements ont contribué à assurer la survie des peuples autochtones à travers l’histoire tout en découvrant des ressources que vous pourrez intégrer à vos pratiques pédagogiques. How to Create a (Simple) Cultural Exchange Partnership
A cultural exchange is a unique opportunity for authentic learning to take place in the hearts and minds of children and adults. Teachers across our nation today face big challenges in implementing Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. We look within to find ways to build trust and work toward connecting and healing to bring Indigenous and non-Indigenous people closer together. A cultural exchange can be safe ground for building life changing understandings. Maxine Hildebrandt and Lisl Gunderman are recipients of the 2018 Governor General's History Award for Excellence in Teaching. Their award winning cultural exchange brought together students from Mother Earth's Children's Charter School, an Indigenous charter school, and Wildwood School, a tiny rural public school. Students in neighboring schools shared one another's histories and differing perspectives which resulted in meaningful and transformational bonds between students, teachers and communities. In this workshop you will come away with the first steps of an Action Plan to create a cultural exchange of your own. This session is well suited for teachers, administrators and leadership.

Fox Chaser: a winter on the trapline
Join the Chris Hsiung Producer and Director of "Elder in the Making" for his follow-up feature film Fox Chaser (produced by Chris Hsiung, directed by Rio Mitchell). This documentary follows a young Cree trapper, Robert Grandjambe Jr. as he chases his dream to live and work on the trapline. But with encroaching industrial development and increasing family obligations, this may be his last chance to live his passion in the freedom of the wild. In the remote village of Fort Chipewyan, food security is scarce, and living off the land has always been important. As more and more people leave the bush for the city, a trapper’s life becomes increasingly isolated. Robert’s family questions the choices he is making. Nevertheless, as he witnesses the mounting stresses put on the land to feed and power our growing cities, he is determined to continue living amongst the natural world he loves. Audiences will be treated to a viewing of the film followed by a Q&A with Chris Hsiung.

This three hour, hands-on workshop will guide you through a mixed-media and cross -curricular creative writing and art making experience. This workshop is deeply rooted and inspired by FNMI ways of knowing and being and is inspired by the book "Sometimes I feel like a Fox" that shares the Anishinaabe tradition of totem animals, written and illustrated by Canadian artist and author Danielle Daniel. Participants will be led through various art making and creative writing techniques and will leave energized and confident in sharing this artistic experience with classes of all ages. Come prepared to paint, bead, embroider and write - oh yeah, and have a fabulous time doing so! This workshop can be tailored to fit all ages.

Indigenous Short Stories from Across Alberta
Join Chris Hsiung, Producer and Director of the award-winning film "Elder in the Making”, to learn about his latest collaboration: a series of short films about the Indigenous Peoples of Alberta to be exhibited at the newly opened Royal Alberta Museum. Ambitious in scope, this series brings Cree, Dene, Metis, Blackfoot and Nakoda voices into the Human History wing of the museum. The museum spent years consulting with Indigenous Elders across Alberta to determine what stories they wished to share. This is an exciting opportunity for educators to hear about story behind the films which cover a range of Indigenous topics relevant to Alberta from the traditional to contemporary.

The “Sixties Scoop”: Understanding Implications and Contributing Towards Reconciliation
From the 1950s to the 1990s, thousands of Indigenous children across Canada were apprehended by provincial governments and places with non-Indigenous families, isolating many from Indigenous culture, language and identity. This session will provide educators with an overview of historical and current insights into the “Sixties Scoop”, as well as increased understanding of its legacy, and arguable continues into present day. You will leave this session with an increased understanding of the complexities of the “Sixties Scoop”, including resources and strategies to contribute towards reconciliation.

The 15 Tipi Teachings and the Sacred Teachings
Did you know that, in the Cree culture, the structure and the construction of a tipi (migwap) are very spiritual and symbolic? It is constructed with 15 poles and each one corresponds to a “teaching”. The “Seven Sacred Teachings” by David Bouchard, presents a generic version of the main teachings, focused mostly on the Anishnabe / Ojibwé culture. Wahkohtowin - We Are All Related
Exploring the idea of Wahkohtowin. Wahkohtowin is a Cree word which denotes the interconnected nature of relationships, communities, and natural systems. Its literal meaning is "kinship", but it is often used to refer to Cree law, or Cree codes of conduct. Participants will explore this idea of wahkohtowin in a sharing circle format and have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions. Learn how this Indigenous world view can be reflected in your classroom and supports your foundational knowledge.

Smudging Circle
Participants will be introduced to a smudging circle. They will learn about the different smudges that are utilized in the different nations of Turtle Island. Each smudge utilized is also a medicine. Participants will learn more about these plants as medicines. To smudge is to bring balance of mind, body and spirit and to make a connection to the Creator. Smudging circles are a way to start a talking/sharing circle.

Participants will explore authentic Indigenous resources and learn strategies which will assist in sharing Indigenous perspectives, reconciliation and treaty education. Critical inquiry, 21st century fluencies and progressive ways of teaching and assessment through balanced literacy will be presented and discussed. The infusion of Indigenous education into the professional practice of Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators will be strengthened with an honest overview of available high-quality Canadian resources.
