When people learn that I am a teacher, the most repeated comment I get is something to the effect of “Oh, it’s so wonderful that you’d willingly work with other people’s little ones.” The reaction shifts significantly when they learn that I work with teenagers. All of a sudden I’m insane! Throw into that mix that I work with teenagers at an Outreach school and I must’ve completely lost it. The truth is completely the opposite. I love my job. I love getting up and going to work not having a clue who is going to walk through the door or what baggage they’re going to bring with them. And I love them. Every single one of them. Over the last 10+ years I have been blessed to have worked with some incredible, and some incredibly challenging, students. My tenure in education hasn’t been easy. These kids come with all sorts of stories and backgrounds. Many of them are incredibly messed up. Society has written some of them off. Parents have let their disappointment show. Traditional schools are at their wits’ ends and so are parole officers. But one thing I have learned in all my years has been true of every single student encounter I’ve had. Ready? It’s a master secret! This secret will change the way you teach. You sure you’re ready? The answer to all of your troubles is… relationship! Build them, nurture them, and you’ll have every single one of your students eating out of the palm of your hand!
