Critical Literacy for Young Children

When we think of critical literacy, we often think of older children, reading and discussing provocative novels. However, research suggests that pre-readers (or struggling readers) have a natural ability to think critically, challenge ideas and pose thoughtful questions. Quality children's picture books, with age appropriate, yet sophisticated text and images, provided the perfect medium for exploring relevant, thought-provoking topics with primary students. This session explores useful book titles, discussion techniques, and questioning skills (for both students and teachers). As Pablo Freire asserts, it is never too early to plant the seeds of inquiry and develop thoughtful, active citizens!
