As part of the Teaching Quality Standard in Alberta, teachers need to be aware and inclusive of students of diverse sexual orientations, gender identity and gender presentations. This can be taxing for any teacher given the continual deluge of information surrounding diverse gender and sexuality students: who they are, how they see themselves, how they present themselves and what they call themselves. The big question for teachers though as it impacts the TQS is WHERE these students see themselves. Discussed and explored in this presentation will be a modern and up-to-date understanding of sexual orientations and gender identities, how these impact the classroom, ways to support diverse gender and sexuality students day-to-day, and resources and texts where these students can see themselves and find the representation they desperately crave from their Social Studies and ELA classes. Also explored will be several resources found at the intersection of First Nations, Inuit and Métis identities and diverse gender identities and sexual orientations.
