This past summer, I decided to look into electronic textbook, preferably those that are free and easily accessible with any device. At our EICS division, we are implementing a “One Student-One Device” policy and though this approach works well with computer-related subjects (Programming, Design Studies, Photography), teachers of other disciplines (Social Studies, ELA) find that the use of personal computing devices (PCD) to be more of a distraction rather than an asset. By PCD, I mean laptops, iPads, tablets, cell phones. Enter CK12.org: a fantastic resource covering mainly science and mathematics subjects presented in the form of “FlexBooks”. There is subject material, multimedia assets, quizzes, simulations, and real-world practices. And best of all, you can create your very own electronic text, with your own content ( this is the “Pay It Forward” part). I liked this concept so much, this session is part of my paying back to the community.
